When seismic waves move through various layers in the earth, sometimes they speed up. What does this tell you about the medium they are traveling through?

The seismic waves indicate that the speed increases when they go from upper mantle into the lower mantle suggesting that the density of the rock in the lower mantle is higher than the rock in the upper mantle.
