How do you use a wind vane to tell the direction of the wind?

To tell the direction of the wind using a wind vane one first has to know the cardinal directions (north, south, east, west). A wind vane spins and points in the direction from which the wind is coming. So, for example, if the arrow part of the weather vane turns to the east then the wind is blowing from the east.
