What external or internal influences might cause an alcoholic to drink more?

I can only speak to the character of Rex Walls in the book. Rex had so many issues that he tried to numb them will alcohol. His emotional instability amounts to successive failures to maintain a job and provide for his family. Rex turns to alcohol for refuge.
