There were 9 red roses and 4 white roses in the vase. Nancy cut some more roses from her flower garden. There are now 14 red roses in the vase. How many red roses did she cut ?

9=red roses to begin with

x=number red roses added

14=total number of red roses

9+x=14

9+x-9=14-9

x=5
