x - 5y = 40
x - 5y+5y = 40+5y
x= 40+5y
3x + 2y = - 33
3(40+5y) + 2y = - 33
3(40) (3)(+5y) + 2y = - 33
120+15y + 2y = - 33
120+17y= - 33
120+17y-120= - 33-120
17y=-153
17y/17=-153/17
y=-9
