What were the causes of the Battle of Hastings?

The Battle of Hastings was a direct result of Edward the Confessor's death. Edward had no heir, thus, the rule of the kingdom came down to force. Harold Godwine and William, the Duke of Normandy both claimed right to the throne, and the reports of what actually happened are conflicting. Godwine, however, was crowned immediately after Edwards death. In response, William landed in England at Pevensey September 28, 1066 with 7,000 troops and cavalry. He seized Pevensey, and then he proceeded to march to Hastings. Harold arrived near Hastings on October 13th and battle commenced on the 14th. In the end, William became England's first Norman king.
