The Sugar Act, passed in 1764, imposed a tax on all imports of molasses, sugar, wine, coffee and other imports. It was an answer to the Molasses Act of 1733, which was largely ignored. As a result, taxes were more regularly enforced and trade with other countries declined..... the colonies were not only forced to pay the taxes but lost a great deal of money on items that were regularly exported in trade.
