England's purpose in the Stamp Act was to tax the colonists on any and all types of printed paper used in the colonies. The documents included legal documents, letter, licenses, media, and even playing cards. These taxes were enacted in order to pay for the cost of protecting the American frontier, namely, the area around the Appalachian Mountains, where England intended to send 10,000 troops. This specific tax angered the colonists because it was intended to raise money rather than regulate commerce.
