What was the Price of responsible government? Upper and Lower Canada in 1840's

What were the different ways that people of Upper and Lower Canada "paid" to finally achieve responsible government in the 1840's?

Responsible government effectively meant the loosening of ties between Canada and the English. It allowed the settler colonies of British North America to pursue greater autonomy within the empire. This meant less support from Britain to settler colonies.
