The Magna Carta heavily influenced both the state declarations of rights and the United States Bill of Rights, which incorporated several guarantees that were understood at the time of their ratification to descend from rights protected by Magna Carta. These rights include freedom from unlawful search and seizure, the right to a speedy trial, the right to a trial by jury in both a criminal and civil cases, as well as protection from loss of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.
The theory of representative government, a supreme law, and judicial review, are also derived from an eighteenth-century understanding of Magna Carta.
