In Chapter Two, we learn that Ramun's father has been promising him he could join the pearl divers when he was sixteen. Now, however, Mr. Salazar is reluctant to have both Salazar men (he and his son) on board the same boat, where a single shipwreck or storm could destroy their entire business.
