Rose appears in the story, Between the Pool and the Gardenias. She is the abandoned baby that the narrator finds near a sewer in Port-au-Prince. Rose is taken in and cared for by the narrator, who praises her for being a quiet baby. Unfortunately, the quietness makes it obvious that she has a serious medical problem. Rose soon dies, and the narrator is accused of witchcraft by the groundskeeper.
