Who is Meimei from The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Short Stories and what is their importance?

Meimei appears in the story, Rules of the Game. She is a young Chinese-American girl, who straddles two cultures as she grows up in the United States with her Chinese mother. Meimei learns how to play chess, and she becomes an excellent player, though in the process, she further distances herself from her mother's culture.
