Who is Maybelline "Maybe" Chestnut from Absolutely Maybe and what is their importance?

Maybelline "Maybe" Chestnut is the only daughter of Chessy, a charm school proprietor and former beauty queen. Maybe is 16 years old when her mother is engaged to marry her seventh husband, Jake. Maybe dies her hair colors like blue, pink, bright red, and green using Koolaid as her dying agent.

Maybe has always wanted to know who her biological father is, but her mother won't divulge the information. After Jake attempts to rape Maybe, and Chessy accuses Maybe of coming on to Jake, Maybe enlists her friend Ted to run off to Los Angeles with her to find her real father.

Maybe is hiding her true self behind baggy clothes, dyed hair, dark eyeliner, and purple lipstick. As her old stepfather comes back into her life and she makes friends with her boss who is a girl that runs a local taco truck, Maybe sheds her disguise and starts to become her true happy self.
