Who is Mavis from Somewhere in the Darkness and what is their importance?

Mavis is a young woman who was Crab's lover before he went to jail nine years ago. When Crab escapes from prison, he goes to Chicago in the hopes of getting back together with Mavis. However, Mavis refuses to go to Arkansas with Crab because she does not want to give up everything she has worked for in Chicago.
