Who is Maurice Herzog from Annapurna and what is their importance?

Maurice Herzog is the author of the novel, Annapurna, and the leader of the French Alpine Club's expedition to explore the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna region of Nepal. Like his fellow climbers, Herzog is a World War II veteran. Each of the climbers agrees to follow all of Herzog's directions while on the expedition.
