Marie is a poor, black girl living in Ohio. She attends a predominantly African American school. She befriends Lena, a white girl, that comes to the school. Marie lives alone with her father because her mother deserted them, but they seem to be coping well. It is Marie's friendship that gives Lena the strength to leave home with her sister after her father begins abusing them.
