Lena is a white girl that moves to Athens, Ohio and begins attending a predominantly black school. This is where she meets Marie. They bond instantly, initially over the fact that both of them lost their mothers. Later, Lena shares with Marie that her father has been abusing her sexually and is beginning to do the same to her younger sister, Dion. Marie helps Lena to make the decision to leave.
