Leibniz was the famous 17th and 18th century philosopher, who invented calculus, and who to this day remains among history's most important philosophers. His book, the Monadology, outlines a complex philosophical system that is still well-known but has few adherents. Russell often mentions his view to contrast it with more widely held views.
