Henri Christophe is a free black man, who works as a chef in Cap. After joining the military, he participates in the successful revolt that made Haiti the first free black country in the New World. After the revolt, Henri becomes king. Like others before him, however, King Henri Christophe enslaves the peasants of northern Haiti to build a great fortress. His people see him as a tyrant and revolt, something that leads him to take his own life.
