Josef Virek is a wealthy man, who is dying from cancer. His body is being kept alive by machines, but his mind continues to function in cyberspace. When Virek learns of the artificial intelligences in cyberspace, he believes that he can use them to transform himself into an AI and inhabit other bodies from cyberspace.
