Who is Johan Oosterveld from The Upstairs Room and what is their importance?

Johan is the man who Sini and Annie are sent to live with. He constructs a hiding spot for Annie and Sini behind the closet in his house. The girls are only supposed to stay with Johan for a week or two but end up staying there for more than two years.
