Jake Mosby is a degree/engineer, one of the young engineers sent down annually to a type of coal mining boot camp that Hank Sr. runs in Coalwood. Sonny meets Jake for the first time, at his temporary residence in the Club house, hoping to sell him a newspaper subscription. Jake is recovering from an excess of moonshine and says, "Your dad..." and then, after pausing, and repeating "Your dad..." cannot finish the sentence. Sonny finishes it for him. "I've heard my dad's a sonuvabitch when it comes to you Ohio junior engineers..." Jake laughs and says that yeah, Homer Sr. is an SOB. Sonny says, "Welcome to Coalwood," then offers Jake the paper. Jake tells Sonny he can't afford to subscribe.
