Who is Grandmother (Nokomis) from The Birchbark House and what is their importance?

Nokomis holds the position of a respected elder in the Ojibwa community. She is described as a wise woman, who is also an experienced healer. She serves as a mentor to Omakayas, as the young woman discovers her connection to the spiritual side of life. Nokomis is encouraging, understanding, selfless, and compassionate.
