Who is Eliza Ballard from --and Ladies of the Club and what is their importance?

Eliza is Thomas and Mary's daughter. She is described as a social snob and disapproves of Thomasina's choice in a husband. When the family falls on hard times, Eliza helps out by working as a clerk in her father's law office. She remains in this postion until her father's death, after which, becomes Ludwig Rausch's secretery. Eliza later dies as a result of a tumor.
