Who is Dame Emily Lowell from In This House of Brede and what is their importance?

Dame Emily is the prioress of Brede Abbey. After the death of Abbess Hester, Dame Emily suffers a breakdown and is sent to a hospital in order to recover. We later learn that Dame Emily is battling cancer.
