Who is Belle Elmore from Thunderstruck and what is their importance?

Belle Elmore is a young woman who has disappeared. In order to explain her disappearance, Crippen invents her death. It is late revealed that Belle was killed, and that Crippen dragged her body into his basement where he disposed of her blood. Her remains were later buried in the St. Pancras cemetery.
