Arthur Evelyn Waugh (1903 - 1966) was an English writer, best known for his darkly satirical novels. Many of his novels satirize British aristocracy and society. In addition to novels, he wrote short stories, biographies, and travel literature. He was successful and admired during his lifetime, though many of his works were controversial. Waugh leveraged his influence to gain a commission during World War II, where he served as a largely ineffectual leader. He spent the latter years of the war serving in minor political appointments.
