Arianna McCune is the reverend's daughter. After her father remarries, she becomes angry and begins spending a great deal of time with the Ballard family. Eventually, she goes so far as to run away from home/ Arianna marries Ben Mercer, after which, she moves back to Waynesboro. Over the course of the novel, Arianna dies after a long battle with tuberculosis.
