Oberlin graduate, Amanda Reid, takes her first teaching job in Waynesboro as a in 1868. She is one of the club's founding members. Her mother worked long and hard to assist Amanda with paying her way through school, and upon her return feels her daughter owes her a debt of gratitude rather recompense. Amanda later develops a superior attitude toward her fellow club members, and thus, alienates those closest to her.
