Importance: Chief Joseph's continuous plea for patience and peace is demonstrated in this quote, as is the Ne-mee-poo warriors' reluctance to acknowledge his words. Their reluctance to follow his wisdom stems from the fact that they feel they have already come too far in their fight with the white people to back down from battle. Their resentment of the conditions imposed on their people motivates them to act more belligerently than Chief Joseph feels comfortable with, but at this point he has lost some of the command of the group which he used to have.
