Mrs. Baker is a positive influence is Holling's life. She helps him when he needs her, she introduces him to new ideas, and she personally brings baseball legends to meet him after he is snubbed by a hero. She also accompanies Holling to the hospital after an accident, helps him with obtainign theater tickets for a date, and purchases the cream puffs the class demands him. Compassionate and caring, she fills in for Hollings father when he forgets to take him to the opening game of the baseball season. The two share a close bond that includes mutual respect.
