André Paulhan is the narrator's father. André opened his tire shop the year his son was born. He raises the narrator in the shop and teaches him the trade as he grows up. André takes his work seriously and values his relationships with his clients. Meanwhile, he tries to stay out of trouble when the Germans invade France. He supports the Resistance and his Jewish neighbors but keeps these loyalties quiet. He also services German soldiers' cars so as to avoid awakening their suspicions. Throughout the war, André tries to keep the narrator safe but cannot ultimately spare him from the war.
