In what way is the narrator responsible for Cécile's death in the short story, Tyres?

Shortly after the narrator shaves down the new inner tube in order to sabotage the officer's car, he watches as the officer pulls up alongside Cécile and offers her a ride as he noticed that her bicycle chain was broken. Moments later, the car crashes, killing Cécile.
