The flowers that the narrator leaves in the place where Cécile dies are symbolic of grief. Although decades have passed since her death, the narrator continues to refresh the flowers. He is afraid of healing from his sorrow, because he is afraid of forgetting Cécile. Keeping flowers at the site is his way of memorializing her.
