The three major themes addressed in Facing Mt. Kenya are detribalization, unity and the ethnography of the Gikuyu people. The book explains the way detribalization has a negative impact on the people, specifically the damage incurred to the culture, sense of identity, education system, and ultimately their livelihood.

The ethnography of the people provides the reader with a complete overview of the people, their traditions, rituals, and customs.

Lastly, the book looks at the value of unity as it applies to the tribe, it's people, its families, as well as the strength unity gives to the community as a whole. The first unit being family, the second religion, the age groupings, and lastly, the community of elders.
