French Story Chapter Four

At school

I finished my first week of school. It's very different from my school in the United States. My school here is in a historic building that looks like the Louvre.

It's much more serious than my American school. It is necessary, for example, to choose a specialty. The specialties are: mathematics, science, history and political science, literature and philosophy, and languages.

What?! A specialty? But I'm 17 and I don't know Brrr!

I love history, so I say "History, sir" with more confidence than necessary. I have more courage now, so why not?

The professor looks at me like: "Eh, yes, Americans and their confidence!"

Lunch here is also very different. There is steak, green beans, apples..............................., cheese, and a salad of kiwis and red apples. And yes, it's very, very good.

During lunch, two boys from the geography class approach me.

"Hi. You're the American, aren't you? My name is Théo and this is my friend, Gabriel."

"Hi, I'm Olivier."

And they start having lunch with me. We have a very nice hour.

Théo is funny, sociable and energetic, but Gabriel doesn't talk much. I have the impression that Théo can be a friend, but Gabriel... I don't know.

At 5:20 pm, the school day is over. Yes, I'm serious: ! School goes until five-twenty in the afternoon!

On Fridays after school, students go to the café in the neighborhood to eat, drink and talk together.

I would like to go to the café too, but I don't have any friends. I'm the only American in the whole school, a kind of exotic animal. Suddenly, I hear: "Hey, oh, Olivier! Olivier!"

I look in all directions. I see Théo and Gabriel in the distance with a group of students. I'm invited to the café! Maybe I can't say now that I don't have any friends...
