Atticus teaches both children the need for charity and respect. He also teaches them the need for everyone to respect the law without prejudice..... blind justice. Lastly, he teaches Jem about fortitude, illustrated through Jem having to read to his sickly neighbor..... this is a lesson in the meaning of courage as well.
