One can assume that most author's write 'what they know' in order to create the most compelling works, whether they are fiction or non-fiction. Therefore, a writer's heritage, ethnicity, upbringing, financial circumstances and religious beliefs will always make their way into an author's work, sometimes without their being aware of it. In Desai's case, this is especially evident.
