The central conflict in the first act revolves around the main characters and their feelings about marriage. Jack is interested in Gwendolen, but Gwendolen is interested in Ernest.... someone she doesn't yet know. Algernon, also pretending to be someone else, decides to join Jack in the country is order to meet Cecily, who is also only interested in marrying a man named Ernest. It's a revolving door of deception, through which two men who appear to be uninterested in marriage..... prove themselves to be anything other than that which we imagined.
