The lawyer was most certainly self-driven to his achievement. He made a statement, took the bet, and was determined to prove his point. No one would have blamed him for backing out at anytime..... he couldn't admit defeat. Thus, it was only by his own self-determination that he was able to keep his part of the bet. Additionally, the lawyer leaves just prior to collecting his money, thus it wasn't about the money..... it wasn't greed..... it was a man proving his point.
The Bet
