Ben describes the prospectors as loners... private men who never talked about the pasts and who only had one life.... the desert.

Madec claims that he though he shot a ewe.

Staining the blanket refers to wrapping the old man's body to move it down to the Jeep... in other words, was the prospector worth a blanket in terms of respect and care.
