What is the author's tone in Zikora: A Short Story?

Zikora is telling her own story, and thus speaks in her own words. In the narrative present, Zikora is in labor. Her vulnerable physical condition amplifies her emotions. In so much pain, Zikora has no interest in wrapping her narrative in clever lyric guises. The more discomfort she experiences, the more angry and irritable she becomes. These sentiments inspire her snarky tone. For example, on page five, when she catches the nurse making a face, Zikora narrates: "How dare she judge me? Was the father of her children in their life, what with her outlandish lashes and all...I would write a complaint about her ridiculous lashes" (5).
