Who are The Sophists from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and what is their importance?

The sophists were wandering professional teachers and intellectuals who visited Athens and other Greek cities in the second half of the fifth century B.C.E. In return for a fee, the sophists offered and education to rich young men in aretē (virtue or excellence). They are discussed in a minor capacity in the book.
