The Speculating Speckled Frog represents the unknown of the world, condensed into a single, incomprehensible thing. This frog literally exists outside the realm of human understanding. It is a spiritual being that thinks in another plane of consciousness, capable of seeing everything in the past, present, and future at any given time. At the beginning of the novel, it refuses to help Zahrah because she is still resistant to learning about the world around her. By the end, as she accepts the wonder of the world outside of Kirki, the frog provides all of the help it can give her and praises her success. This frog is never explained, but it is not meant to be as it shows how some things can never truly be understood.
