Who is David from Z for Zachariah and what is their importance?

David is Ann's cousin. He came to live with Ann's family after the death of his parents. He had a dog named Faro. David was supposed to stay with Ann when her parents went to look for other survivors, but he hid in her parents truck and left with them. She never saw any of them again.
