Chambers had a close relationship with Elijah Rios, who died some years before the events of the novel. The two served together, and Chambers was a close witness to the events involving Karim and Rana that eventually led to Rios’s death. As an act of revenge, Chambers kills Karim and drops a weapon near the body, making the corpse appear to have been armed.
