The Big Man is commander at Camp Independence, and acts as a representation of the bureaucracy involved in running the campaign in Iraq. Jack meets with him a number of times, alternatively being chided for breaking protocol or lauded for his actions. In both instances Jack feels the Big Man is mistaken, demonstrating the detachment the Big Man has from actual day to day operations. He is portrayed as an imposing, linebacker-like figure who takes little nonsense from anyone on his staff.
