Snoop is Jack’s Sudanese interpreter of Arabic, and a constant companion for most of the novel. Being the interpreter for all of Jack’s surreptitious behavior, Snoop becomes a confidant and a player in the unfolding events of the novel. His real name is Qasim, though his nickname comes from his fondness for American gangsta rap.

Snoop is a loyal friend to Jack, often giving advice when needed. He freely volunteers his opinions when translating for Alia, Haitham, and Yousef as well. Snoop also asks Jack to help him in his effort to move to America after the war by requesting that he write a letter of recommendation. Despite Snoop receiving many of these letters, he is denied a visa, and thus turns to Jack to smuggle him out of Iraq.
