The scorpion is a symbol of the values Chambers espouses, namely vigilance and dedication to survival. The scorpion defeats the camel spider, a creature of the desert, in a prize fight, indicating the triumph of Chambers's values in the conflict as a whole. It is also portrayed as a wild creature, unable to be tamed or kept as a pet, and Jack fears the spider as the worst form of death the desert can offer.
